Fiona and Emma from Elliott Wood recently met with Alex, who helps run the soup kitchen from across the road from the office, to find out if The Building Society members can do anything to support this worthwhile cause. They offer an incredible service, providing free hot meals and clothes to the homeless, elderly, lonely and poor in the area, and in addition to these ‘essentials’ they even have a counsellor on hand for emotional support. Alex advised that there are three key areas members can help:
This is what they need most! They run the kitchen on a rota basis, with different volunteer groups and companies typically offering a morning per month to help prepare breakfast and lunch. Occasionally volunteers don’t make their shifts, and in these instances urgent help might be required to ensure people can be fed.
They have some items that they need more than others – they have lots of food provided by local restaurants but need things like sleeping bags, rucksacks, thermals, layers, and consumables such as razors. They keep an Amazon wishlist updated with the latest needs.
The soup kitchen runs regular fundraising events, which The Building Society members are invited to attend. Further details will be shared when the next one is scheduled.
If any of our members are interested in supporting the soup kitchen’s work, please speak to Fiona or Emma.
