Technology and globalisation are changing our world at an ever greater rate. Sustainability needs to urgently become part of everyday life, waste needs massively reducing. Energy has to be conserved and economics have to become more equitable. We need to learn how to lead healthier lives and be more tolerant. Culture has to become embedded in our society. Today over 270million children didn’t attend school, and many of those who did were taught a curriculum, in a building, in a way which has not changed much in the last 100 years. If we want to make a difference we have to change our habits and rethink education.
In this session, chaired by education innovator Marcus Orlovsky, we will hear what is good and bad from Headteachers and Trusts about their buildings, curricula and people followed by a panel discussion with built environment professionals to discuss what we can do to change education and inspire more people to improve the quality of our lives.
Jane Fletcher – Chief Executive, Aldridge Education
Jane joined as CEO in May 2019. She has held a number of senior positions: prior to joining Aldridge Education she was regional Director for secondary schools: before that she was Executive Principal within Harris Girls. Jane is an educator with a proven track record of transforming schools. Harris Girls’ has been in the top 3 percentile nationally for progress for the past 5 years consecutively and is currently in the 1st percentile. Jane gained her first degree in Music from Southampton and went on to take a Masters in Education.
David Anderson - Headteacher, Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School
David studied Design and Technology at the University of London, Goldsmiths College. After gaining his first degree in 1987, he joined the first cohort of MA students, completing this in 1991. He became Headteacher at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in 2008 which is known for its global links. The school was judged Outstanding in every area following an Ofsted inspection in March 2015. David has also acted as a trustee of the Design and Technology Association between 200 and 2017.
Grainne Grabowski - Consultant Headteacher
Grainne was, until recently, the Head of St Michaels, an Ofsted Outstanding school in Bermondsey. In her time, Grainne led the school through a PFI new build, let the school out of PFI and negotiated with the local authority to design and build a new 6th form to house the increasingly oversubscribed school. Now consulting for and with serving headteachers in the South East, she is also in addition a consultant with EduCareM.
Ethan, who recently graduated with a degree in Political Science from the University of Surrey, spent a good amount of his time in an award winning new build school in Sutton. Taken into care at an early age, Ethan was diagnosed on the Autism spectrum and now advises schools and other organisation highlighting the struggles that students with Autism, ADHD and other Emotional Behaviour Disorders face.

Marcus is a Chartered Accountant: he was one of the team at Stanhope during the Broadgate, Ludgate, Stockley Park and Chiswick days. He was responsible for financing the projects and recalls the ‘small’ ITN Foster building in Gray’s Inn Road as being a wonderful distraction to the big projects about to burst. Later he went to co-found a tech company before embarking upon getting design led PFI solutions into the education space. With 43 projects won out of 48 bid, and with a capital value in excess of £4Bn, he learned a great deal about the importance of architecture, Capex and Opex. Now running the education social enterprise he founded which has worked with nearly 15,000 school students, he also hosts a number of TEDx conferences, speaks at major commercial conferences and consults with a number of major education providers. Most recently (early November 2019) he returned from a Gateway 5 review of a high school in Sydney New South Wales.
